Why You’re So Tired Even When Nothing Seems “Wrong”

If you’re a lawyer, a mom, or a business owner—especially if you’re all three—you know how to juggle. You’ve got the calendar dialed in, the meal plan ready, the documents prepped, and the sunscreen packed for the school field trip. On paper, everything looks “under control.”

So why does it still feel like you’re drowning?

The answer might be something you can’t see: the mental load.

What Is the Mental Load?

The mental load refers to the often-invisible cognitive and emotional labor that keeps families, careers, and businesses running. It’s not just the tasks themselves—it’s the thinking behind them:

  • Anticipating everyone’s needs

  • Remembering appointments and follow-ups

  • Managing emotional dynamics at home or work

  • Planning logistics no one else has thought of

  • Making sure nothing falls through the cracks

For many lawyer moms and high-achieving women, this becomes a silent second job—one that’s unpaid, unacknowledged, and unrelenting.

You might be the only one who knows when the dog is due for shots, when the summer camp deposit is due, and who likes what in their lunchbox. It’s exhausting—and yet it’s often invisible to the people around you.

Why the Mental Load Matters

When we talk about burnout, stress, or feeling “off,” we usually look at our calendars. We ask, What’s taking up my time?

But often, what’s draining your energy isn’t on the calendar—it’s in your head.

The mental load wears you down not because it’s dramatic, but because it’s constant. It keeps your nervous system in a low-level state of vigilance. You’re always “on.” That kind of pressure is not sustainable.

How to Lighten the Load

Here are four ways to start shifting the mental burden:

1. Name It

Start by acknowledging it. Give yourself credit for all the mental labor you do. Awareness is a form of release.

2. Inventory It

Take a pause and actually list what’s on your mental plate. Try this Mental Load Inventory Worksheet to make the invisible visible.

3. Share It

Have honest conversations—with your partner, your kids, your team—about what you’re holding and where you need support. Don’t wait for them to notice. Invite them in.

4. Drop It

Not everything needs to be done. Not everything needs to be done by you. Perfection is optional. Peace is not.

You Are Allowed to Rest

You were never meant to do this alone. Being a leader—at work or home—doesn’t mean carrying every detail. It means knowing when to delegate, when to pause, and when to ask for help. You deserve systems that support you, relationships that nourish you, and a life that gives you space to breathe. Start by looking at what’s unseen.
