The Burnout Cycle Field Guide

According to the 2026 ABA Study on mental well-being in the legal profession, nearly 1 in 5 women lawyers are experiencing depression symptoms severe enough to require professional attention. They consistently describe stress as cumulative, ongoing, and embedded in the structure and culture of legal work, not as isolated incident.

The problem with this?

If nothing changes, women lawyers are more at risk than their male counterparts to…

  • Develop harmful habits such as addiction
  • Officially cross the threshold into burnout which puts their health at risk
  • And ultimately, women lawyers are more likely to leave the profession

Can you relate to any of these statements?

Chronic Overload and Constant “Catch-Up”

On the drive to work, you feel your fingers grip the wheel and your jaw clench thinking to yourself, I cannot keep up any longer.  And the truth is you have so many competing roles… lawyer, parent, partner, leader…. But you never feel like you are 100% at any of them.

Work Is Crowding Out Life and Relationships

You finally make it home after a long day at work.  You rush in the door, too late to tuck the kids into bed.  The guilt hits like a ton of bricks.  What is the point of working this hard if it is taking priority over what matters most?

Self-Care Non Existent

At the end of the day, you KNOW what you need to do in order to care for yourself (exercise, sleep, boundaries, etc).  But the problem is, actually finding the time to do it.  Even worse, the harder you work, the worse you feel.  It’s a continuous cycle of a stressful job requiring self care, yet no time to enjoy it.

Fear of Failure

As you sit over brunch listening to some of your corporate friends complain about their fear of dropping the ball at work, you know that your situation as a lawyer is quite different.  If you make a mistake in this line of work, you could risk getting sued or losing your license.  Fear of failure as a lawyer is a real concern that you need to address without staying at work until midnight, night after night.

Isolation and Lack of Safe Support

You have a therapist and you vent your work/life balance frustrations during your session, but it’s not enough.  You crave a community of other female lawyers who have “been there, done that” and actually GET the kind of stress that you deal with.  But, you also can’t open up in an authentic way and feel safe doing it, within the workplace.  Where do you lean in for real support?

Survival mode

You kick off your shoes after a long day in the office.  Without thinking, you immediately reach for something to numb yourself.  The more stressful the day, the more numbing behaviors appear.  Over time, you find yourself drinking more wine, overeating fried food; ironically, this all feeds back into the cycle of stress.

It doesn’t have to be this hard.

There is a better way for women lawyers to break the cycle of stress and feel fully present at home, without dropping the ball at work.

Here’s where I come in.

As a Lawyer of over 25 years turned Burnout Coach for women lawyers, my job is to…

  1. Break your cycle of stress using a unique system combining realistic, lawyer-specific strategies and holistic health coaching strategies.
  2. Help you to control the controllables (especially when it comes to time management) AND to manage your reactions to the uncontrollables (so you don’t feel so overwhelmed.)
  3. Overcome limiting beliefs that have you stuck feeling guilty no matter what you’re doing whether it’s at work or at home.

What will be different in your life once you’ve made the changes necessary to sustainably overcome “law burnout?”

Fully Present

You’re fully present in the moments that matter — reading bedtime stories without one eye on your phone, actually hearing what your partner says at dinner instead of zoning out, showing up for your life instead of just getting through it.

Control of Your Time

You feel on top of your caseload instead of constantly playing catch-up. Deadlines don’t send your heart racing anymore.  You trust your system, and you trust yourself.

Sustainable Energy

You have the energy to exercise, sleep, and actually enjoy your life — even during your busiest trial weeks. No more choosing between your career and your health.

Are you ready to feel fully present at home without dropping the ball at work?
